I agree! There is more chance of winning the lottery than having an accidental discharge of a sprinkler system as long as it is correctly installed and maintained. An alternative to a traditional fire sprinkler system is a low pressure water mist system. If considering water mist you must make sure that it has been tested and approved for land based applications, one such solution is EconAqua which is tested and certified by VDS in Germany.

I must agree with Karl above. I work in the insurance industry and I can tell you there is much more property damage (claims filed) for water damage than fire. This months Popular Mechanics magazine contains an article which claims sprinkler systems improves life saving odds from 99.41% (with smoke alarm) to 99.6% with sprinkler system. Without even taking into consideration the considerable cost of the sprinkler system, it would seem to me the system would cause more risk (of property damage) than any additional safety benefit for the typical family.

The odds on an accidental discharge of a correctly installed and maintained fire sprinkler system is around 16,000,000 to 1. When there is a fire only the localised sprinklers will trigger meaning that any damage will be minimal and definitely a lot less than the fire would have caused!

Does anyone have any statistics on cost of damage due to accidential discharge by sprinkler heads or by pipes that burst due to freezing or otherwise??? What's next how about central station monitoring, separate sprinkler lines, backflow prevention, you name it. How about adding a little common sense to unfunded government mandates? - Probably next to impossible but I will pose the question anyway. In high rise residential - I'm all for sprinklers but some idiot is busy telling me I need sprinklers in a single story residential dwelling with two means in egress just because there is an low volume office with two hour fire separation on the lower level. GOVERNMENT MANDATES WITHOUT COMMON SENSE WILL BE THE DEATH OF US ALL. GIVE ME A BREAK AND ENGAGE YOUR BRAIN.
